A recent comprehensive study has meticulously examined the evidence surrounding two remarkable practices: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). And guess what? The results are in, and they're nothing short of amazing!

Here's what went down in the world of mindfulness:

  • 🧘‍♀️ The study reviewed 21 randomized controlled trials with a minimum of 33 participants.

  • 🧠 MBSR improved mental health in 11 studies compared to waitlist control or treatment as usual (TAU) and was as effective as an active control group in three studies.

  • 🌟 MBCT reduced the risk of depressive relapse in two studies compared to TAU and was equally effective to TAU or an active control group in two studies.

  • 🤔 Overall, studies showed medium effect sizes, but there were some limitations such as lack of active control group and long-term follow-up in several studies.

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) were originally used to prevent relapse in individuals with mental health difficulties and were considered for preventing suicide due to their high prevalence and limitations of current interventions. It was later shown that adding Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to Prevent Sui$ide (MBCT-S) to treatment reduced sui$ide events and hospitalizations among high-risk veterans over 12 months.

  • MBIs were scientifically proven effective in addressing sui$ide risk factors and bringing about neural changes related to cognitive control and emotional non-reactivity.

  • MBIs were theorized to enhance awareness, promote equanimity, and develop skills for managing suicidal crises.

  • Future research aims to explore the telehealth delivery of MBCT-S and identify subgroups of suicidal individuals who would benefit most.
