📱 Participants reported their daily phone use (yikes!)

📝 They then wrote about an important personal value (like their love for pizza)

📖 Next, they read an article about the health risks of excessive phone use (cue the panic)

💪 But here's the twist: heavy users who affirmed their personal values were more motivated to reduce their phone use than those who didn't (take that, haters!)

Next time someone tells you to get off your phone, just remember to affirm your love for pizza and you'll be more motivated to break up with your phone. Your mental health will thank you! 🍕🧘‍♀️

DOOMSCROLLING, FOMO, AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Excessive smartphone use can lead to dysfunction in a person's life, also known as problematic smartphone use (PSU). (They even have a fancy acronym for it now!)

Here’s the dirty details :

  • Too much screen time can seriously affect mental well-being, causing anxiety, fear of missing out (FoMO), and distractions from notifications.

  • FoMO is emotionally exhausting and associated with doomscrolling, which can cause psychological distress and negatively impact life satisfaction, mental well-being, and harmony in life.

  • Negative effects from doomscrolling can emerge within as little as two minutes of exposure, but stories that show kindness can counteract these negative effects.
